On May 18, 1984, the Benton County Daily Democrat ran a half-page article I wrote entitled "Diabetes, a common ailment, is treatable. At this time I was representing a diabetic support group called "The Association for Diabetes." (Not to be confused with the American Diabetes Association.) I also published a monthly newsletter about diabetes, called "Diabetic Data."
In May of 1986 I won 2nd Honorable Mention in a poetry contest in Springdale, Arkansas with my poem "Secret Spring." The conference was sponsored by Springdale Poets & Writers "Poets' Roundtable of Arkansas.
On September 4, 1988 my non-profit newsletter "Goat Udderings" received unexpected recognition in the Morning News, Rogers, Arkansas. The article by Flip Putthoff was entitled "When it comes to goats, this editor gets the word out".
In June of 1989, the national "United Caprine News" published my article "Angora Farm Is Scene of TV Show".
In October of 1989 my work with the American Dairy Goat Association led to the publication of another article "All the Little Children." This time it was in the national magazine, Dairy Goat Journal. The article was inspired by the professional showmanship of young children at an annual goat show in Russlleville, Arkansas. The judge came all the way from Ontario, Canada.
In June of 1999 a Writers' Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas took me to my first national competition. I managed a 2nd honorable mention with the first two chapters of my western novel "Nightriders of the Double Spur" in the "Westward Ho" class. In that same conference, I also took 2nd place for the first chapter of my romance novel, "Courtship of the Recluse" in the Fiction Writers of Central Arkansas competition.
The turn of the century finally took me to first place in the June 2000 Little Rock Conference with the first two chapters of my western novel, "Standoff at Apache Butte" in the Westward Ho class. I took 2nd place in the Grif Stokley Mystery competition with my short story "The mission of Sin Peligro."
In June of 2003 I broke into a new field - travel writing. I placed 3rd honorable mention on my article "Paradise on the Prairie".
The June 2004 Little Rock competition again took me to a new category - short western story. I placed 2nd with my story, "Apache Pass"
